2011 was the year of the IDO, the IHMA Development Officer. ExCo appointed Captain Jaap Lems and asked him to examine the IHMA structures, compare them to other similar organizations and make recommendations for change. ExCo felt that it was time to improve the professional standing of the association, and at the same time engage members more in the running of the association and share the load of the work that goes with an association. Jaap Lems, recently the harbour master of the port of Rotterdam, had just stepped down as Chairman of the EHMC and Vice-president of the IHMA. The IDO organised brainstorming meetings with colleagues, interviews with similar organizations and an extensive members’ survey. The members survey has resulted in understanding members’ wishes and ambitions and where IHMA should position itself. All this was the basis on which the IDO drafted his recommendations for the future; “Charting the future of the IHMA” and a concrete action plan “The passage plan for the future”. The proposals cannot be implemented without the memberships’ approval and this was sought during OGM 2012. The recommendations, action plan and results of the members’ surveys can be found in the members only section, under ’Organisation -- Documents -- IDO project & results’.
