Ports are busy, and by the very nature of their business activities, hazardous places to work. The Harbour Master has a key role to play in keeping everyone safe, be they people living and working in or close to the port, the port’s staff, customers or visitors to the port environment.

Harbour Masters must be familiar with and on occasions highly knowledgeable of relevant safety, environmental and health laws at the international, national and local level.

An overview of international legislation that is relevant to Harbour Masters is found here.
